There are 2 types of Pinterest accounts that can be set up. One is a personal account while the other is a business account.
Difference between Pinterest business and Personal accounts
The main difference between the 2 are the terms of service (TOS). The TOS of a Pinterest personal account state that the account cannot be used for promotion while those of a Pinterest business account state they can.
So, if you want to use your account to promote yourself or your business I recommend that you set up a Pinterest business account. This way you won’t be breaking their rules and you’ll avoid suspension.
Another big benefit of using a Pinterest business account is that it unlocks Pinterest’s built in analytics for both your profile and your website. This data can be used to increase engagement, get more Pinterest followers and traffic and to find influencers.
You will also be able to create and run Pinterest ads if you own a business account.
So, if you want to take advantage of all these benefits follow the below guide on how to create a Pinterest business account…
Converting a personal Pinterest page to a business account
Before I go ahead and show you how to create a Pinterest account from scratch I wanted to inform you that there is an alternative method. If you already are using a Pinterest personal account for promotion and would like to continue to do so without violating their terms you can simply convert it.
To do this you should read my post How to Convert a Personal Pinterest Account to a Business Account. Here you will learn how to convert it in under 2 minutes and the next steps you must take.
How to Create a Pinterest Business Account from Scratch
Visit the Pinterest for business page first.
Next click the red ‘Join as a Business’ button.
You will be redirected to a new page where you will be asked to fill in your details in a form.
In the form add your email address, password, business name (the company name you want to appear on your business account) and choose a business type from the dropdown menu.
After that click on the red ‘Create account’ button.
Your account will now be created and Pinterest will guide you through the rest of the set up process.
First you will need to pick your language and location and click on the red ‘Next’ button.
After that you will be asked to add/verify your website.
So, add your website in the field provided and click on the red ‘Next’ button that appears.
Next, you will be asked to claim your accounts. If you have accounts on Instagram, Etsy and/or YouTube claim them now and click the ‘Next’ button.
If you don’t have an account on any of these sites. Just click the later button.
When you claim an account you will be able to view all the pins saved/pinned (by you or anyone else) from that account in your analytics.
After that Pinterest will ask you if you are interested in running Pinterest ads or aren’t.
Choose the appropriate answer and click on ‘Next’.
Pinterest will then ask you to choose at least one topic that describes your business. Go through them and pick as many as you want and click on the ‘Done’ button.
You will be following the topics you pick and Pinterest will display relevant pins on these topics in your feed later. This will make it easy to find content to pin.
Pinterest will then recommend that you add the browser button.
If you haven’t added it yet, I recommend that you add it now as it makes it easy for you to pin images from pages in the future. When you are on a page all you will need to do is click on the extension, choose the image and then save it onto a board.
After you do this your account will be set up. But it won’t be fully optimized. To do that you need to go to your profile settings and add your logo/headshot, add your location, claim/verify your website, and execute a few more steps.
I have detailed everything that needs to be optimized in this infographic.
But before you do any of those you should start by claiming/verifying your website as shown in this article. This will unlock Pinterest’s web analytics which can help drive a lot of traffic.
So, go ahead now and verify your website. After that view the infographic and optimize the rest of your profile.
