1. Highlight Text Before Pinning:

Before pinning an image from a page if you highlight any text, that text will appear as the description to the pin. This can save you a lot of time, as you don’t have to write a good description each and every time.

The Highlighted Text Automatically Appears in the Pin Description

You can just highlight the headline, sub-heads or any other important text you like before you click the ‘Pin It’ button and you have your description.

Website and blog owners can take advantage of this and provide a good headline, several sub-heads and attractive text in bold that can be used as description. This can be a great way to make your website Pinterest friendly.

[Update: This feature is no longer available. Pinterest removed it. An alternative is to use Buffer. With Buffer you can schedule posts to Pinterest and the text you highlight on the page will automatically become the pin description.]

2. Automatic Pin Descriptions:

Usually if you don’t highlight any text, the words the image has been labelled with or the words set up by the website owner while placing the ‘Pin It’ button, will appear as the description of the pin. So if you have a website or a blog, make sure you’re labelling your images with appropriate and relevant names as this will ensure that all pins from your website have good descriptions which can play a key role in getting more pins and repins. I have shown how people can take advantage of this feature in my Free Pinterest Marketing Video Tutorial.

3. What’s Being Pinned:

You can easily find out what’s being pinned from a website by using the URL http://www.pinterest.com/source/websitedomainname.com/. Just replace websitedomainname with the website domain and you will be able to see the latest pins being shared.

Find Pins That Have Been Pinned From a Website

For e.g. the latest pins that are being pinned from Social Marketing Writing can be seen by using the link http://www.pinterest.com/source/socialmarketingwriting.com/.

4. Find Friends:

The quickest way to get followers on Pinterest is by finding and inviting people you know. Pinterest makes it easy to find friends through Facebook, Twitter, Google and Yahoo accounts.

The Account Settings Can be Found Under Your Name

Connect Your Social Media Accounts to Pinterest

All you need to do is connect your Facebook, Twitter, Google and Yahoo accounts on your account settings page and you can start following people you know through those accounts.

Find Friends and Begin Following Them

Begin Following People on Pinterest

As they already know you, they will be highly likely to follow you back, thereby helping you get followers quickly. You can also just type in email addresses and send invites to people and ask them to join you on Pinterest. I have written more about how to use this feature in my infographic, 20 Ways to Get More Pinterest Followers.

5. Find Boards to Follow:

Pinterest has got a ‘Follow Boards’ tool, which can be found under the drop down menu on the top right corner, that can help you find boards to follow.

Use the follow boards tools to find boards to follow

Begin Following Boards That Interest You on Pinterest

If you are new to Pinterest and need some good boards to follow, this tool can help you find them.  You can choose your favourite topics and the tool will display boards you can follow.

6. Search Better:

When you perform a search on Pinterest it displays pins which contain the words you typed in. These are pins from everyone.

Choose the Pins, Boards and Pinners You Would Like to View on Pinterest

You can change this to ‘Just My Pins’ to see pins that have only been pinned by you. You also have the option to search for boards or pinners by clicking on the Boards and Pinners options.

7. Clear Recent Searches:

Have you recently searched something embarrassing and don’t want others to know about it? Well the good news is that you have the ‘Clear Recent Searches’ feature, under Pinterest Account Settings which can help delete things you have searched recently.

Clear Search History on Pinterest

All you need to do is visit the setting page and click the ‘Clear Recent Searches’ button and everything you have searched recently will be deleted.

8. Send Pins:

Pinning, Repinning and Liking aren’t the only way to share pins on Pinterest, there’s ‘Send’ too. By clicking on ‘Send’ you can send your pin to people on or off Pinterest. You can send pins to people you mutually follow (i.e. people who follow you back), Facebook friends and through email.

Send Pins on Pinterest by Clicking Send

Now Type Your Message and Choose the Person

To send a pin, scroll over it, click on ‘Send’ and type in the name of the person you would like to send it to. Wait for their account to appear, choose it and hit send. If they are not friends with you or are not on Pinterest or Facebook, you can type in their email address and send it. You can also click the message option and add a message.

9. Clear Recent Contacts:

When you use the ‘Send’ options Pinterest quickly displays the profiles of people you have recently interacted with to make it easy for you to send pins.

Cleat Recent Contacts on Pinterest

If you would like to clear these recent contacts, you can do so by clicking on the ‘Clear Recent Contacts’ option which can be located on the settings page below the ‘Clear Recent Searches’ option.

10. Manage Email Notifications:

Are you frustrated with receiving an email every time someone repins or likes an image or follows you on Pinterest? Well you can stop receiving email notifications for each everything by making a few changes under ‘Email Notifications’ on the account settings page.

Get Pinterest to Send You Updates Less Often

Just choose yes for things you would like to receive and no for things you wouldn’t like to. You can also ask Pinterest to send these updates once a day at most, instead of each every time they happen. If you would like to completely stop receiving email notifications choose ‘No’ for the ‘Get email notifications’ option under account settings.

11. Edit Notifications on Pinterest:

You can also choose to receive only notifications from people you follow, instead of everyone.

Click on Edit under notifications

Choose the Notifications Offer Your Prefer and Save

Click on Edit on the notifications tab, choose your option and save your changes.

12. Get more privacy:

On Pinterest, your profile is public, everyone can check out your boards and see what you pin. But you have a few options that can make it more private.

You Can Ask Pinterest to Stop Tracking Your Data

You can prevent your profile from appearing in search results on search engines. You can also ask Pinterest to stop tracking your data to personalize your experience. More details about how Pinterest tracks your data and how they use it to better your experience can be found here. Both these settings can be changed under the settings page too.

There is also the secret boards feature which you will learn about a little later in this post.

13. Popular on Pinterest:

Would you like to find out what’s trending on Pinterest? Would you like to find out great things to pin on Pinterest?

Find Popular Section

Pinterest Popular Section

Then the popular section is for you. This is the place where you can find pins that are being repined, liked and commented on repeatedly. Here you can find pins your followers will like. You can share it with them to increase engagement. This doesn’t just have to be on Pinterest. You can share it on other networks like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, etc. – any network you like.

14. Everything, Categories and Videos:

Pinterest Everything Section

Under the ‘Everything’ section (which can be found in the same place as the popular section) on Pinterest you will find everything that is being shared on Pinterest. This is another great place to look for interesting pins. If you would like to see content belonging to specific categories, visit the various categories to look for pins on topics that might interest you. Under the videos section you can see all the videos that are being pinned.

15. Gifts:

Quickly Find Gifts on Pinterest

Another great section that might interest you is the Gifts section. Here you can find really great things to gift people. It can come in handy if you’re in a hurry to buy something good. Another good thing is that the price of the gift will appear on the pin. This can help you decide quickly. You can also get your own products to appear in the gifts section by simply adding the price to the pins. When you add the dollar sign or pound sign and follow that with the price of the pin, then the price will be displayed on the image part of the pin itself. You can learn how Feather Earrings are using this feature by reading the post 6 Tips For Using Pinterest for Business.

16. Secret Boards:

On Pinterest you have the option to create three secret boards that will only be visible to you and other board contributors (if you add some).

Create a Secret Board Box

If you scroll to the bottom of your account, you will see the option to create three secret boards. You can learn how to create a secret board by reading the post 6 Ways Businesses Can Make the Most of the Latest Pinterest Updates and you can learn how to use them by reading the post 3 Tips For Using Pinterest Secret Boards.

17. Group Boards:

Type name of pinner in the who can pin field

You don’t have to be the only person who contributes to a board. You can easily invite others to contribute to your board too. You can also get invited to contribute to other boards. This can be a great way to increase your presence and form relationships with other Pinterest users.

To learn how to invite people to your Pinterest boards read the post How to Invite Guest Pinners to Your Pinterest Boards and to learn how to make the most of group boards read the post 5 Steps to Launching a Successful Pinterest Group Board.

18. Board Categories:

You have the option to add a category to your board. Making this tiny change will help your pins receive more exposure, as they will appear in the category sections on Pinterest.

Add Board Categories to Your Boards

The category the pin appears in will be the one you selected. Choose a category that is most relevant to the pins you share on that board and stick to sharing pins on that topic. To learn more about how to add and use board categories read the post 4 Ways to Get More People to See Your Pins on Pinterest.

19. Pinterest Resources:

A list of the best pinterest apps would be interesting. Pingraphy used to be amaazing and free, but then they sold out. Would love to know about any that come close.

  • adarusha

does anyone know how to italicize text in a comment or pin description?

    • Hi Adarusha,

I don’t think you can do that!

      Mitt

  • skg

The Help Center is too basic and there is no community forum where other pinners can offer their help. I can’t even figure out how to suggest this.

  • Andy Kennedy

Thanks Mitt, a really helpful and professional article. I don’t suppose you’ve any idea why Pinterest only shows some (or none) of my pins when I use the ‘just my pins’ search feature. I’ve checked that the searched-for word appears in my pin descriptions, but it seems unable to find them. It’s very frustrating to be unable to find the things I’ve spend hundreds of hours pinning! Thanks again.

  • Wilshire International Realty,

Is there a way to have pinterest auto post to my company’s google+ page?

  • Phyllis

My secret boards have disappeared from the drop down box preventing me from pinning to them now. What happened to them and how do I fix it?

  • Sim

Does anyone know how to see a history of people you have followed and unfollowed?

  • Well honestly speaking this information about Pinterest is really useful for everyone Keep it up Admin……

  • Rex

Is there a way I can make personal notes about my pins on non-secret boards? Are my comments public?

  • Peggy Penn

I am no longer able to use the Highlight Text Before Pinning tool. It was so useful and find it hard to reason why they’d take it away. Maybe it’s just me? Can you let me/know if it’s still available? I haven’t been able to find any updates on it, but it disappeared after one of Pinterest’s “upgrades.”

    • BluePotion

      I am missing it too.

    • Frank West

you right click to highlight, I usually click copy then when the pin box appears I can paste it if it didnt show up

  • Alicia

Is there a way to make a board then make another board inside of that. For example you have a board that is Apples than have another board that is for pies, bars, bread etc. inside of that?

    • Merrin Joinery

No, but the way we get round it is to use a board as a heading with just one pin with on the ‘heading’ board. You can see what I mean here http://www.pinterest.com/merrinjoinery/

  • Brooke

How do some businesses make a bold title and then a description below it on their posts? They look much more clean and professional.

  • Eb

Am new to Pintrest and would like to delete likes that are put in my likes and I did not put them there

  • Interesting!! I’m surprised to know we can even Optimize Pinterest Pins too!! 😛

  • AT

I would like to know if there is a way to type the board (and an autofill feature) that you want to pin to. It takes way to long to scroll down to my 90th board to pin something. Also an auto “sort” feature for alphabetizing selected boards would be great!

    • Frank West

usually you can type the first one or two letters and the board will appear in the box that appears when you go to pin something.

  • JMart

Why has the sort of pins on the home feed changed? It used to be all of the latest pins at the top so I could scroll down to where my latest pins appear to get caught up. Now some of my latest pins appear at the top so I don’t know where the new starts and stops.

  • Joyce

I love Pinterest, I just wish there was an option to mark certain photos so I don’t see them for the 46765467654867 time when scrolling the category specific boards.
Or to exclude pins hat have certain words in the title or description.

    • Michelle

THIS. is there no answer for this??

  • Dave

How do you remove a category from your “Home” board feed? I put three or four there at the start and now want to remove some

  • I have already used most of the tricks that is mentioned here in Pinterest except the find friend option, as I thought it doesn’t really worthy to use. But now will try this once for sure.

  • bunnyboo786

How can you scroll down when you select an image you want to look at? I can’t scroll down to read the descriptions or to see the related pins unless I click on the image itself.

  • Cheyenne

Does anyone know how to see who is looking through your pins?

    • Frank West

anyone can look at your pins unless you have them on a private board and you dont invite anyone to the board.

  • Sandra Stuppard

is there an easy way to get directly to a bottom of a board and work your way up? I tried dragging the bar to the bottom but it never seems to be the absolute end of the board– i keep getting an endless feed

    • Frank West

you will never get to the end, Pinterest has been pinning for years now it is impossible to reach the end.

  • Maggie

How about a way to “opt out” of all the promotional pins?

  • Is there a properties on each pin to tell when a pin was created?

  • RichardSunday

how can I block images that contain a specific word, for example ‘halloween’

  • Heather Southern

How can I block certain types of pins (ie- animal cruelty pics, pics of disabled people being injured or made fun of etc.) It robs me of any enjoyment I might have on Pinterest? thanks so much …. : )

    • Frank West

if it is a picked for you pin, mouse over the bottom right corner and you will see an x, click there, and when the tab comes up you can click on the option you prefer. If you are following someones board and you dont like the pins they pin, unfollow them.

  • Glenda Gosey

How can I change the “pinned from’ area?

  • I facing a problem, if possible please suggest- when I am creating a new board it is not showing any option to add a pin. I want to create my 2nd board, but it is not showing any option to add. I created my 1st board very easily, then why it is showing now??

    • Frank West

when you mouse over a new pin and click on pin it you will have the option of what board to pin it to.

  • Cheesy Mac

    6. Search Better: – The option to only search my pins does not appear anywhere on my pinterest screen…I have followed the tutorial above to no avail. I can do this on my app on my smartphone…but not on the computer desktop. Has this option been removed on the desktop site? Am I missing something?

    • Frank West

yes I use a computer too, so type what you want in the search and hit enter, then you will see all pins or your pins in the lil block above the pins.

      • Cheesy Mac

Thanks Frank!!! I noticed this just the other day! 🙂 Happy pinning!

  • David R. Millar

How do i know if the people I am inviting on pinterest have an account or if I am inviting them to first create an account and then follow me? I just want to invite them to follow me if they already have an account

  • Endemic Surf Where?

would love to know if there is a way to return only “new pins” regardless of popularity? Every time I search something I get back the same pins that I have already pinned. I would like to be able to receive results that I have not yet pinned, that are not the most popular. If something is popular, great! but if Ive already pinned it, why do I need it in my search results again?

  • Lucas

Hi everybody! Is there anybody who knows why recently on pinterest the descriptions of posted images are disappearing? Until last week about all pins were explained in few words; now the description bar is left empty. It’s so bad! Please, if someone knows why, makes me know… Tank you.

    • Frank West

some people choose to omit details and just use a period.

      • Lucas

Thanks for your answer… I contacted the help desk and they told me that actually I’ve been chosen by the developers to “experience this new feature”. It couldn’t be changed yet… Oh my god!!! By the way I solved: just downloaded theprevious version and keep that one 😉 Cheers.

        • nealpatten

Hi nealpatten, written you back an email answer; did you get it? Cheers

  • Frank West

a really ANNOYING pop up for email sign up was thrown in my face when I opened this page, it should be my choice if I want to sign up for your email, but since that happened I will never sign up or read the complete page, thank you very much.

I need HELP with Pinterest. Suddenly my icon on my computer started taking me to an old account I didn’t even know I had. So I deleted that account. Then I couldn’t sign into the correct account, so I clicked on “send reset password link” or whatever it said. So I did the reset and tried to sign in but it says “We sent you a new password.” It won’t let me sign in and won’t let me ask a ‘help’ question unless I sign in first!!
