When I noticed her approaching me my heart began pounding wildly. Not because I fancied her, but because I was certain I was going to get mugged.

She jumped out of nowhere right in front of me. It was so sudden and in the dark of the night that I initially wasn’t even sure if anything human was approaching me.

I began crossing off a list on what could appear so suddenly…

One of them is batman, but batman doesn’t really exist so that was off the list.

Next was a wild animal that wanted to eat me. But this is England the largest predators are Foxes and Badgers. Both wouldn’t try to take on a human.

Then there are close friends who want to publicly humiliate you because that’s what friends are for.

And finally a psychopathic mugger who wanted my money and belongings.

I narrowed it down to the mugger.

I was really scared. ‘Not piss myself scared.’ Just scared enough.

When she was finally in front of me I could see she was a girl a few years younger than me. Her dark greasy unkempt hair and bloodshot eyes stood out from the head. She looked serious.

She wore a tattered greyish jumper and a similarly coloured jacket. Her hands were in the jacket’s pockets. I noticed a bigger bulge in the pocket the right hand was placed in.

I began to panic.

I pondered on what to do. I hoped that all she had was a knife. Then I could finally use some of that karate I learned in school and maybe escape.

I kept telling myself. ‘This is Lancaster. There is no crime. No one gets mugged here, especially not in the city centre.’

That’s when she spoke. Her hands ventured out of her pocket and I was relieved to find them weapon-free and the pocket seemed flat. She was nervous. Her hands waved shakily. She couldn’t even look me in the eyes properly.

‘Can you please give me some money? My friends and I would like to buy some stuff,’ she said while pointing at them. I recognized them. They were the local homeless people who were always drunk.

One of them scared a friend of mine with a burp once.

She wasn’t a mugger. She was a homeless girl who wanted some money to buy ‘stuff’.

I pitied her, but the decision was easy. I could give her the £5 I had so that she could purchase some stuff or I could keep it and use it for food.

I was extremely broke at that time as I had just graduated from university with a massive debt and I only had a part-time job at a restaurant and a little supplementary income from my freelance work to support me. I hadn’t found success as a freelancer yet. And quite often I would live on £5 a week.

So I walked away with a weird wave from my hand while the sound ‘aaaaaaooooooo’ escaped my mouth. I was so confused that I couldn’t even say ‘no’ properly.

Then a few weeks later I was walking through the city centre again. Another girl approached me.

This girl was the complete opposite of the 1st girl.

She said ‘Hi!’ while smiling and walking towards me.

She introduced herself as Laura and mentioned that she worked for the Red Cross. She wore a bright red shirt that had the words ‘British Red Cross’ imprinted on it.

She was blonde, well dressed and friendly. She looked around my age, maybe slightly older.

She asked me my name and age.

I asked her to guess my age.

If she guessed a high number I would have gotten upset and been like ‘Whaaaat? I don’t look that old. Do I... Do I…’

If she guessed a low number. I would have said my actual age.

She might apologise, but I will immediately respond with an answer like. ‘Don’t worry about it. It happens all the time. I get asked for my ID every time I buy alcohol at the store.’

She didn’t take this risk though.

She answered, ‘I am not good at guessing ages. I would estimate that you are either between the ages of 18 and 20 or between the ages of 20 and 25'.

Smart answer. She didn’t want to take the risk of upsetting me. She could have actually said ’17’. Everybody would love to be that age, except 17 year olds.

I didn’t know how to respond to it. So I said ‘good guess’. A couple of laughs later I told her my age.

Now that the ice was broken, Laura moved on to the real reason she was there and asked me what my opinion of the homeless was? What I think the regular homeless person looks like?

‘I think the regular homeless person is always drunk. I often see them in the city centre,’ I answered while pointing at one near us.

'That’s a common misconception. Although conspicuous, these people are a minority,’ she answered.

Then she went on to tell me what the average homeless person is like and the steps the British Red Cross takes to improve their lives.

After that she asked, ‘would you be interested in donating? You don’t have to pay me right now. You can think about it and get back to me. If you can give me your details, we will call you later.’

I pondered on what I should do. As aforementioned, I was broke and every penny was important to me.

Eventually I decided on giving my details. I gave her my name, email address and landline phone number.

I hoped that my housemates Andy and Bob would pick up when the people from the British Red Cross called. They were better off than me financially and would be able to donate.

I also hoped when they called I would be able to make a donation too, because I am very optimistic. I always hoped that tomorrow would be the day when I would get the breakthrough client who would change things for me.

If I had more money by the time she called I wouldn’t mind donating it.

Do you see the difference?

The first girl wasn’t able to convince me to think of sparing some money. She wasn’t even able to get me to talk properly, while the other girl, Laura, convinced me to seriously consider what she was saying.

I think it was more than the way they were dressed. The first girl startled me with the sudden approach while Laura approached me in a friendlier manner. She built a rapport first and then explained what she does in detail and only after she got her message across clearly did she ask for the favour.

We are all the same too. Whenever we want to make a positive impression on someone whether it is at a job interview or a date, we dress our best, we straighten our backs and be politer than we usually are. We do everything to make the other person feel special.

But how can you do this online, especially on social media, where you don’t get the chance to meet the person face to face. The answer is to set up really good social media pages. The way you set up the account with the profile image, cover images and other details is how you dress it up and the words you write on it are the conversations you have.

Businesses pay social media managers hundreds of dollars to do this as it gets them followers who will visit their website and buy from them.

They pay me $500+ to set up Pinterest accounts.

I make sure I get it right every single time by using a checklist.

The checklist ensures that I set up each and every part of a Pinterest account perfectly.

I want you to have it so that you don’t have pay hundreds of dollars to get a Pinterest account set up. I even made some modifications to the checklist and made it more detailed so that even someone new to Pinterest can use it.

This checklist is useful for both business owners who want to set up Pinterest accounts for themselves and marketers who want to set it up for others.
